Additional Details

The woodcut is one of the very few contemporary depictions of New York's Federal Hall, where the First Congress met, the Constitution and Bill of Rights were adopted, and Washington was inaugurated. The illustration is captioned with a patriotic poem. Inside, each of the monthly almanac pages are headed with a short poem on an American general, starting with Washington, and including Nathanael Greene: "The gallant Green with angel care / In darkest hours of stern dispair / Sought out the Lion's den . . . " Drake 3418; ESTC W20836 (Bullard attribution); Evans 21580. One other copy known at auction since 1921 (Swann sale, 1 December 2011, lot 6).
